VN transfers rice farming techniques to Cuba

Cuba will extend the rice farming area applying techniques transfered by Vietnam to 40,000 ha, Director of Cuban Ministry of Agriculture’s Rice Agro-industrial Group Roberto Cabello said.

Vietnam began to assist Cuba in paddy cultivation in 2002 in the framework of agricultural cooperation between the two countries. The cooperation has now entered the fourth period, which will last until 2015 with the target of ensuring rice self- supply for Cuba .

Bui Van Duong, leader of Vietnamese expert team to Cuba affirmed that the effectiveness of the supporting programme encouraged the two countries to continue the cooperation.

Currently, Cuba has to import 60 percent of its annual rice consumption of about one million tonnes. So far, Vietnam is Cuba ’s major supplier with 400,000 tonnes per year./.
