Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Chu Pham Ngoc Hien on March 18 stressed the need for Vietnam to build a national strategy on climate change as natural disasters occur more frequently.

He told a seminar to learn about the UK experiences in its climate change legislation that climate change must be added to all development strategies and plans of all sectors and localities and there must be legal documents on the issue.

According to the official, Vietnam has been coordinating with international organisations to implement climate change-related international treaties and take measures to adapt itself to climate change.

Vietnam participated in and ratified the UN framework Treaty on Climate Change and the Kyoto Protocol along with boosting the completion of legal documents and creating a legal foundation for natural disaster control and mitigation.

At the event, British Ambassador to Vietnam Antony Stockes praised Vietnam for its effort in coping with climate change, including a national programme on climate change in 2008./.
