The 2012 Volunteer Festival was held by the Central Committee of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union and the United Nations Volunteers Programme in Hanoi on December 4.

The festival aims to encourage and honour the contributions by volunteers and voluntary organisations to the country’s socio-economic development. It celebrates the 10th National Congress of the HCM Communist Youth Union and International Volunteer Day on December 5.

At the festival, volunteers and organisation representatives discussed the millennium goals and evaluated the implementation of those committed by Vietnam . Suggestions for long-term and sustainable voluntary activities were offered, as well as directions for those activities in Vietnam and other countries.

There were a number of activities for young people, including Wordless Art, Shared Stories, Corner of “Quiet Voice”, a photo exhibition on volunteer activities, games, and music performance.

Duong Van An, Secretary of the Youth Union’s Central Committee, called for donations to help the community create better study conditions for children from rural and underprivileged areas.

December 5 was chosen as the International Volunteer Day to honour global volunteers’ achievements for peace and sustainable development.-VNA
