Many war veterans, heroic mothers, heroes from the armed forces and those involved in the renovation process gathered in Hanoi on Dec. 1 for a ceremony to mark the 20th establishment anniversary of the Vietnam Veterans Association (VVA).

On addressing the ceremony, Party General Secretary Nong Duc Manh congratulated the VVA and praised the association and the contributions it has made to the country’s development.

He stressed that over the past 20 years, the VVA has upheld the tradition of Uncle Ho’s soldiers and promoted their strength in the cause of national construction and defence.

The association, with more than 2.5 million members, has made several practical contributions to the success of the renovation process, especially to the development of the Party, government and socialism in general, said the Party leader.

He asked the VVA to liaise with the Vietnam Fatherland Front and social organisations to deal with emerging social issues, unearth and combat corruption and waste and schemes involving hostile forces.

He went on to say that the VVA’s branches should encourage veterans to assist each other to step up production, reduce poverty and improve the population’s living conditions.

On the occasion, General Vo Nguyen Giap, the VVA’s Honourary President, sent his congratulations to the association.

General Le Van Dung pinned the Order of Independence, first class, awarded by the Party and State, to the VVA’s flag./.
