Bangkok (VNA)Synchronised attacks took place in at least 13 locations in Thailand’s three southernmost provinces of Pattani, Narathiwat and Songkhla on April 19.

According to the Internal Security Operations Command, the attacks, mostly with grenades, resulted in some deaths and injuries in the three provinces.

Seven attacks were reported in Narathiwat province. A special task force unit and a military base were hit by grenades.

Grenades were also thrown in two police stations and one checkpoint in Pattani province while two bombs went off in front of a base of defence volunteers and a group of patrolmen was ambushed in Songkhla province.

The attacks occurred in the context of Islamic militants in the country declaring independence and rejecting the Government’s plan to set up a safe zone in the southern region.
