Vietnamese weightlifter Thach Kim Tuan on September 20 bagged a silver medal at the men’s 56kg category of the ongoing Asian Games (ASIAD 17) in Incheon, the Republic of Korea (RoK).

Tuan, born in 1994, missed a chance to clinch the gold medal although he broke the Asian record in the jerk at 134kg and lifted 294 kg in the snatch.

Om Yun Chol from the host country earned the gold as he set a new world record with a total lift of 298kg, or 1kg higher than the previous record made by himself last year.

Meanwhile, in the fencing competition, Nguyen Tien Nhat won a bronze medal in the men’s epee category after being defeated by world defending champion Park Kyoungdoo of the RoK inn the semi-finals.

Earlier, Vietnam’s shooting team pocketed one silver and one bronze in the men’s 50m pistol and the men’s team 50m slow fire pistol, respectively.

Finishing their first day of competition at the ASIAD 17 on September 20, Vietnamese sportsmen temporarily ranked 9 th in the medal tally with two silver and two bronze medals.-VNA
