Hanoi (VNA) - The national weightlifting team left for the Asian championships in Uzbekistan, targeting more Olympic slots.
The squad includes seven men and two women under the coach Huynh Huu Chi.
Chi said the female athletes had clear chances to complete their duty.
“Here, the results of athletes who have already qualified for the Games will not be counted. Therefore, our lifters do not have to worry about that. If the women team can rank in the top six they will secure a ticket,” Chi said.
In case they fail to make the top six at this championships, an athlete who ranks highest in the world in her category and had not yet received her own Olympic berth will receive a wildcard from the International Weightlifting Federation.
Vietnamese Vuong Thi Huyen is No 1 in the priority list in the women’s 48kg class. Huyen recently grabbed two silvers and a bronze at the world championships.
The Asian tournament will last until April 29.-VNA
