H1N1 influenza pandemic claims at least 16,713 lives worldwide since the virus was first detected in Mexico and the US last April, the World Health Organisation (WHO) informed on March 12.

According to WHO, the pandemic has spread to 213 countries and territories.

In Europe and North America, A/H1N1 outbreak seemed to be eased up, however, the pandemic showed signs of getting widespread in western Africa .

The virus is also spreading fast in Southeast Asia with Thailand suffering most.

WHO announced A/H1N1 flu the global pandemic in June last year and affirmed that it was still early to declare the pandemic over in late February.

According to WHO’s experts, A/H1N1 influenza has only passed the most serious period and turned into a kind of seasonal flu.
WHO Director General Margaret Chan said the pandemic may not be conquered until 2011 and argued for constant vigilance against the virus./.
