The court of Cambodia’s capital city Phnom Penh on April 20 opened a hearing on false information and fake document charges against Sam Rainsy, the President of the Sam Rainsy Party.

Rainsy was charged with spreading false information and publicising fake documents concerning the demarcation and planting of markers along the Cambodia-Vietnam border.

As the defendant is in Paris, his representative to the court, attorney Choung Choungy, suggested that a separate committee be set up to investigate the scene where Rainsy uprooted temporary poles marking the position of markers to be planted in Chantrea district in Svay Rieng province last October.

According to Cambodian law, if Rainsy were convicted of spreading false information and publicising fake documents, he would get a jail term of up to 18 years in addition to the previous sentence given by the Svay Rieng court.

Early this year, the court of Svay Rieng province sentenced Rainsy to two years in prison for damaging State property and inciting racial discrimination.

The court also ordered Rainsy to pay 60 million Riel (around 15,000 USD) in fines./.
