Woman martial artist wins berth in Youth Olympics

Vietnamese taekwondo martial art athlete Nguyen Thanh Thao won a ticket to the first Youth Olympics Games by finishing third at the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) qualification at Tijuana , Mexico , which wrapped up on Friday.

Thao scored four wins in the women’s 55kg category which featured 41 martial artists.

The Thai Nguyen-based fighter beat Emelly Cartagena of Puerto Rico 2-1 in the opening bout and Francini Vasquez of Croatia in the second.

She went on to thrash Charlotte Brown of Canada 9-3 and defeat American Selina Copersmith 5-3 before losing to Mexico ’s Monica Chavez Rivera in the semi-final.

Thao will be Vietnam ’s sole taekwondo contestant at the inaugural games which will be held from August 14 to 26 in Singapore .

Four other Vietnamese taekwondo contestants, Doan Thi Huong Giang, Nguyen Quoc Cuong, Nguyen Thi Huyen Trang and Vo Minh Nhat returned empty-handed./.
