A movement launched by the Vietnam Women’s Union (VWU) has over the past year raised almost 54 billion VND to build 4,590 charity houses for poor women across the country.

The figure was released at a ceremony held in Ho Chi Minh City on October 18 in response to the movement in the presence of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) Central Committee Secretary and Deputy Chairwoman of the National Assembly, Tong Thi Phong, and CPV Politburo member and HCM City Party Committee Secretary, Le Thanh Hai.

VWU President Nguyen Thi Thanh Hoa said the movement is a practical action to uphold the national tradition “Love others like yourself” to help poor and disadvantaged women overcome difficulties and establish themselves so as to contribute to the national development.

The union also took this opportunity to honour fellow members for their contributions to all aspects of social life such as healthcare, education, culture, sports and economy.

This year, three units, namely female staffs from the National Library, the Thang Uyen Tea Company and the Women Cultural House in HCM City, and 10 individuals receive the award.

The union also granted scholarships for 10 university female students with best academic records, showing its care for the country’s future masters./.
