Work on the construction of a thermal power plant got underway on July 30 on Ly Son island in central Quang Ngai province by the Vietnam National Coal Mineral Industries Group.

The 6MW plant is part of a series of electricity development projects for sea and island area that the government assigned to the group.

With an investment capital of over 237.4 billion VND (13.3 million USD), the plant is expected to be completed by 2011, providing more than 3 million kWh of commercial electricity a year, to the island, which lies in an important position regarding security and defence.

Addressing the ground-breaking ceremony, the Vice Chairman of the National Assembly Nguyen Duc Kien praised Quang Ngai province and the group for their efforts to boost Ly Son island’s socio-economic development.

He asked the group to incorporate Ly Son island and the surrounding sea in the Dung Quat-Sa Ky-Ly Son port triangle into the expanded planning area of the Dung Quat Economic Zone.

About 15 nautical miles from shore, Ly Son island district comprises of An Vinh, An Hai and An Binh communes and has a population of more than 20,000.

Electricity on the island is currently supplied by a small-capacity diesel generator that has not met the needs of local people for production and daily life./.
