The JAKS Hai Duong Power Co., Ltd under Malaysia’s JAKS Resources Berhad Group held a ground-breaking ceremony for a thermo-electricity power project in the northern province of Hai Duong on September 9.

The Hai Duong Thermo-electricity Power Plant is the largest foreign-invested project in Vietnam so far this year, with an investment of 2.2 billion USD.

Covering 300 ha in Phuc Thanh, Quang Trung and Le Ninh communes of Kinh Mon district, the coal-fired plant, including two turbines with a combined capacity of 1,200 MW, will be built under the form of Build Operate Transfer (BOT) and operate as an independent power plant with a 25-year contract with the Electricity of Vietnam (EVN) Group.

The first 600 MW turbine of the plant is expected to be put into operation in the fourth quarter of 2016 and the second one in the second quarter of 2017.

Speaking at the ceremony, Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Thien Nhan said that once operational, the project would provide an abundant power source for Hai Duong province and the country, as well as boosting trade cooperation between Vietnam and Malaysia .

He urged the province to create all favourable conditions for the investor to ensure the project proceed on schedule.
