The PetroVietnam Power Corporation and EPC contractors on November 26 held a ground-breaking ceremony for a wind power plant on Phu Quy island in the central province of Binh Thuan.

Located in Long Hai and Ngu Phung communes, the 335 billion VND plant will include three turbines with a total capacity of 6 MW and is expected to generate about 25.4 million kWh of electricity per year.

Once operational in February 2011, the plant will help ease power shortages on the island and create jobs for local people, thus boosting the island’s socio-economic development.

At present, Phu Quy island has only one diesel-fueled electricity plant, which has a capacity of 3,000 kW and supplies electricity for just 16 hours per day./.
