World Bank pledges support for building Law on Ethnic Minority Affairs

The World Bank (WB) will provide assistance to the first phase of a project to devise a draft law on ethnic minority affairs.

A cooperation agreement to this effect was signed by Minister-Chairman of the Government’s Committee for Ethnic Affairs Giang Seo Phu,and Victoria Kwakwa, the World Bank Country Director for Vietnam, ata ceremony in Hanoi on May 25.

Theagreement comprises pre-feasibility studies in a number of provincesthroughout the country between July and October this year.

The development of a law on ethnic minority affairs is part of theongoing efforts to implement the Action Plan on the Strategy on EthnicMinority Affairs by 2020, which was approved by the Prime Minister in2013, the Minister explained.

Meanwhile, the WBDirector expressed hope that the project would help address thedevelopment challenges faced by Vietnam’s ethnic minorities, while alsoboosting the relationship between the WB and the Government ofVietnam.-VNA

Vietnam, Laos strengthen border defence friendship

At Border Marker No. 460, the two defence ministers jointly took part in the traditional ceremony of repainting the marker. Beyond its symbolic significance, the ceremony reflected the determination of the two Parties, States and armed forces to safeguard every marker of national sovereignty, preserve the achievements of border demarcation and marker planting, and develop the Vietnam–Laos border into a symbol of peace, stability, cooperation and development.
