senior officials in Brunei.
During the 14th ASEAN Senior Officials Meeting on Transnational Crime (SOMT) in Bandar Seri Begawan on June 23-26, participants deliberated on the progress of work and emerging threats in the field.
They also discussed in depth the full implementation of the relevant provisions of the ASEAN Political Security Community by 2015 and the SOMTC Work Programme which lists eight areas of transnational crimes including the fights against terrorism, human trafficking and money laundering.
The meeting commended the headway in the implementation of the programmes that include the establishment of the Working Group on Cybercrime, the drafting of the ASEAN Convention on Trafficking in Persons (ACTIP), and the Regional Plan of Action to Combat Trafficking in Persons (RPA).
It also highlighted the need to build capacity, especially for personnel and investigators, and apply technology to crack down on transnational crimes.-VNA
