Cambodian and Thai officials are set to hold talks on May 8 to discuss measures to prevent Cambodian residents from illegally logging rosewood in Thai territory.

Cambodia ’s Secretary of State at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Long Visalor, and Thai Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Jullapong Nonsrichai are expected to be involved in the talks.

The move aims to establish joint patrols along the two countries’ border to prevent Cambodian citizens from illegally crossing into Thailand to log, and also help them avoid death, according to an announcement released by Cambodia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs on April 30.

Last year, Thai armed forces shot dead at least 45 Cambodians trying to cross the border into Thailand, and as many as 264 were arrested. Another 7 Cambodians have been killed in the first four months of this year.-VNA
