The number of victims due to landmines and unexploded ordnance (UXO) has dropped considerably from 4,320 cases in 1996 to 266 cases in 2008, according to a recent report presented by Cambodia Mine Action Authority (CMAA).

This success is due to the cooperation and assistance provided to Cambodia by its development partners and UXO removal organisations, Prak Sokhon, Vice President of CMAA was cited as saying on July 9 by AKP while speaking at a workshop on the development of a national strategy for landmine action.

So far, a total of more than 200 million USD have been granted as non-refundable aid to mine-clearance operations in Cambodia by concerned international agencies and the international community.

Over the past 17 years, some 460 square kilometres of land were freed from mines and UXO and were subsequently used for building schools, villages, houses, health centres, local roads, and for farming.

The annual number of mine victims has gradually gone down, according to the report, from the 4,320 cases in 1996 to just over 800 per year between 2000 and 2005 and down to 460 in 2008./.
