A large number of Khmer minority families in the Mekong Delta province of Hau Giang have risen from poverty thanks to a Government support policy.

Since the Government issued Decision 74/2008/QD-TTg with the purpose to provide land for housing and farming and jobs for needy households in ethnic minority areas in the region, many families in Hau Giang have received assisted to stabilise their family finances.

According to Lam Tuyet Thao from the provincial Committee of Ethnic Affairs, nearly 2,000 households from the Khmer ethnic group receive assistance from local authorities, 846 of which were provided with building and agricultural land while others received jobs.

The living condition of Khmer people in Hau Giang has improved remarkably with a gradual decline in the number of poor households and increases in the number of comfortable or prosperous families.

Nearly 240 local households rose out of poverty in 2014.

Luong Nghia Commune of Long My district is one of the localities that effectively implemented support policies for Khmer people. Almost all the households that benefited from the project successfully developed farming and breeding models, contributing to improving their incomes.-VNA
