Hundreds of Hanoians in Hai Ba Trung district’s Nguyen Du ward donated blood during a humanitarian event launched by the Central Committee of the Vietnam Red Cross Society and the National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion on May 26.

The donation drive is an annual event and this year’s programme marks the 152 nd anniversary of World Red Cross Day and the summer 2015 campaign “Nhung Giot Mau Hong” (Red Drops of Blood).

In 2014, over 1.05 million units of blood were collected during the drive, 8.4 percent higher than the amount recorded in 2013.

The volume of collected blood was used to treat a large number of patients, protecting people in desperate need of blood.

According to the World Health Organisation, Vietnam needs about 1.8 million units of blood each year.-VNA
