More than 1,000 delegates representing over 8,700 Buddhist monks and nuns in Ho Chi Minh City attended their Buddhist Sangha’s congress to discuss tasks for the eighth term (2012-17) on Sept. 27.

Addressing the opening of the congress, Most Venerable Thich Tri Quang, Head of the Sangha’s Executive Committee, said in the 2012-17 term, the municipal Sangha’s working agenda will look to boost Buddhism in the city.

At the congress, 53 official members and 25 alternate members were elected to the Sangha’s 2012-2017 executive board.

Following the event, Secretary of the HCM City Party’s Committee Le Thanh Hai and Chairman of the Municipal People’s Committee Le Hoang Quan hosted a reception for representatives of the Sangha’s new executive board.

HCM City is home to 8,737 Buddhist monks and nuns, 1,161 places of worship and 4 million Buddhist followers.

During the last tenure, the Sangha contributed 786 billion VND to the city’s social and charitable activities.-VNA
