Jakarta (VNA) – Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi has called on Norway to invest in developing the electric vehicle (EV) battery industry, in the context that the Southeast Asian nation attempts to build a national EV ecosystem.

Marsudi made the suggestion during a meeting with her Norwegian counterpart Anniken Huitfeldt on the sidelines of the Oslo Forum in Oslo on June 12.

The two sides also discussed measures to strengthen forestry cooperation, and partnership in energy transition.

Indonesia is committed to developing the downstream EV battery industry and building an electric vehicle ecosystem in the country. President Joko Widodo has underscored the importance of industrial downstreaming in a bid to make Indonesia a developed country.

To expedite growth of the electric vehicle ecosystem, the Indonesian government has issued an incentive policy by offering a purchase discount of 7 million Rupiah (around 469 USD) each electric motorbikes and cars, starting from March 20, 2023.

Norway leads the world in EV adoption. Since the 1990s, the Norwegian government has been taking steps to accelerate the process of EV transition, and it is one of the first countries to create tax incentives for the environmentally friendly means of transport./.
