Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama held talks with World Bank President Robert Zoellick for the first time since the premier’s inauguration in September.
The two agreed in Tokyo that Japan and the World Bank group would enhance their partnership also in the areas of poverty reducation and providing assistance to countries such as Afghanistan and Pakistan, according to Kyodo news.
Finance Minister Hirohisa Fujii and Foreign Minister Katsuya Okada also held separate meetings with Zoellick and agreed with him on those points, the agency said.
The World Bank will begin full-scale negotiations with member countries next year to strengthen its capital base to better assist the needs of developing countries.
During the meetings, Zoellick, however, did not make any special request to Japan, the World Bank’s second-largest shareholder, to increase its financial contributions, according to the news agency./.
