Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin is on a working visit to Thailand from August 22-23 to promote bilateral relations.

This is the first official visit to Thailand made by Muhyiddin Yassin since he took office in 2009.

He told the press after his courtesy visit to Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra that Malaysia wants more investments from Thailand to further boost trade ties between the two countries.

According to the Deputy PM, Thailand is now the fifth largest trade partner of Malaysia and the second largest of Southeast Asia.

Two-way trade between the two countries enjoys an annual growth of 12 -13 percent each year and about 400 Malaysian companies are investing in Thailand , he said.

Muhyiddin Yassin also affirmed that Malaysia is ready to act as a reconciler in the peace negotiation progress in southern Thailand between the Government and the Barisan Revolusi Nasional ( BRN ).

Earlier on August 21, the Malaysian Ambassador to Thailand said both governments recognise that peace and stability in the south of Thailand play an important role in fostering development in the border area between the two nations.-VNA
