The Mekong Delta Economic Cooperation Forum (MEDC) 2014 will be held in Soc Trang province in November, focusing on the restructure of agriculture and the building the new-style rural area.

The information was released at a meeting between the Steering Committee of the Southwestern Region and the provincial People’s Committee on March 6 in Can Tho city.

The eighth event of its kind, the forum aims to foster the linkage between the regional localities and other cities and provinces nationwide and abroad, thus helping the region attract further investment.

Deputy head of the Steering Committee Nguyen Phong Quang said the MDEC-Soc Trang 2014 is a significant event to promote socio-economic development in the province and the region, as it is timed to coincide with the Ooc-Ombok, one of the most important annual festivals of the Khmer people who make up a large part of the population there.

The Mekong Delta region consists of 12 provinces and one centrally-run city with a total area of 40,000 square kilometres and a population of about 18 million. It is the largest granary of the country.-VNA
