Myanmar President U Thein Sein on September 15 said the government will make every effort to ensure a free and fair general election on November 8.

The upcoming election is one of the huge tasks to bring Myanmar to a democracy, he said, noting that the country is at an important juncture when Myanmar people hold in hands opportunities to realise their aspirations and decide their future.

The voters, on their part, also have responsibilities and duties to ensure the creation of a new democratic state in the future, he added.

According to the Union Election Commission, there are 32 million eligible voters in the country. Among 6,189 candidates, 5,866 are nominated by 92 political parties and 323 are independent.

As many as 1,171 election units have been set up throughout the country, including 330 for the House of Representatives, 168 for the House of Nationalities, 644 for the region or state parliaments and 29 for ethnic group representatives.-VNA
