Hanoi (VNA) – The National Assembly’s Standing Committee will ask the National Assembly to consider the deputy title of Vo Kim Cu given his wrongdoings in the Formosa marine environmental incident, said NA Secretary General Nguyen Hanh Phuc on April 22.

Vo Kim Cu is the former leader of central Ha Tinh province where the Formosa factory is based. He was elected as a deputy of the 14th National Assembly by a majority of 75 percent during the national elections in May 2016.

After the Formosa-caused marine environmental pollution incident affecting four central coastal provinces was brought to light, many deputies asked the parliament to review Cu’s deputy title right at the first meeting of the 14th NA.

At the time, the NA Secretary General Nguyen Hanh Phuc said any reconsideration of Cu’s title had to wait for the official conclusion of the Party Central Committee’s Inspection Commission and the Party Central Committee’s Secretariat on his wrongdoings in the Formosa case.

On April 21, 2017, the Party Central Committee’s Secretariat announced a conclusion on wrongdoings related to the Formosa environmental incident of the Party Affairs Section of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment and several officials under the management of the Party Central Committee’s Secretariat.

The Secretariat decided to dismiss Cu from his post as member of the Standing Board of the provincial Party Committee in two tenures of 2005-2010 and 2010-2015, including the positions as Secretary of the Party Affairs Section of the provincial People’s Committee, Vice Secretary of the provincial Party Committee and Secretary of the provincial Party Committee in line with Party regulations after Cu was found to have signed many documents against the law to aid Formosa.

According to Phuc, Vo Kim Cu’s wrongdoings were serious and he no longer had enough credibility to be a National Assembly deputy.

The final decision will be made during the upcoming third meeting of the National Assembly in May this year.-VNA
