The fifth Science Film Festival in Vietnam themed “The World of Light” will take place from October 11 to December 6, the Goethe Institute announced on October 6.

The festival is among activities in response to the 2015 International Year of Light initiated by the United Nations to underline the importance of light and optical technologies in sustainable development.

Targeting young audiences, it will feature 13 short films by producers from Thailand, the Philippines, Germany, the UK and Canada.

Notably, the German film “Nine-and-a-half: Bright Night – How Light Pollutes the Environment” will help children realise the negative impacts of artificial light and learn ways to prevent light pollution.

The event will also offer scientific and technological experiments and games with the participation of children and adults.

Screen selections were chosen from 140 science films made in 42 countries around the world, said Hoang Duong – Director of the company that co-organises the festival, adding that film screenings and experiments will also be held at many high schools nationwide.

Festival activities will be organised in Hanoi, Da Nang, Ho Chi Minh City and the provinces of Vinh Phuc, Thai Nguyen, Thai Binh, Quang Nam and Dak Lak.

As many as 25,000 children and young adults in nine provinces and cities across Vietnam took part in the 2014 Science Film Festival. The figure is expected to reach 30,000 this year.

The festival is scheduled to commence with free entrances at 3 pm on October 11 at Hanoi’s Kim Dong cinema.-VNA
