Therapeutic methods for patients infected with A/H1N1 influenza are paying off, with most recovering quickly and no deaths reported so far, Central Hygiene and Epidemiology Institute Director Dr. Nguyen Tran Hien said on July 14.

Cases of infection have been treated according to medical instructions by the Health Ministry, and which they have thoroughly and effectively adopted, Dr. Hien said, on the sidelines of a workshop to exchange experiences in the treatment of the disease held in Hanoi.

According to the Health Ministry, as of July 13 afternoon, 247 A/H1N1 patients out of the total 299 confirmed cases diagnosed so far have been discharged from hospital after treatment.

The patients cured took “Oseltamivir” tablets in accordance with the Ministry’s therapeutic guidelines. All have received clean bills of health after only 7-10 days, said Clinician Dr. Tran Tich Hien.

No human-to-human transmission has been reported so far, however, participants at the workshop warned that the number of infections is likely to increase in the coming winter season.

In response to this, Vice Health Minister Dr. Nguyen Thi Xuyen called on participants to hold in-depth discussions on finalising the Ministry’s therapeutic methods, as well as exchanging opinions and experiences on A/H1N1 treatment in Vietnam and abroad, along with the use of anti-viral medication in the prevention of the A/H1N1 and A/H5N1 influenza.
