The northern province of Tuyen Quang is exerting every effort to help local people with disabilities fully promote their abilities and equally involve them in socio-economic activities.

To realise this effort, the province is carrying out a project on supporting disabled people from 2013-2015 with a vision towards 2020, said Vice Chairwoman of the provincial People’s Committee Vu Thi Bich Viet.

It plans to step up dissemination of the Party and State’s policies on disabled people and include plans to support them in its socio-economic development programmes.

The province will regularly organise training courses to enhance local officers’ proficiency in supporting people with disabilities, as well as encourage organisations and individuals to jointly back them so that they can access education, healthcare, jobs and legal services, and partake in leisure activities.

By 2015, Tuyen Quang aims to help 70 percent of disabled people gain access to healthcare services and the same figure of children less than six years old be screened to early detect their deformities.

Around 400 disabled people will be provided with orthopaedic surgery and functional rehabilitation and 700 others at working age will be given vocational training and suitable jobs.

Tuyen Quang is now home to more than 14,000 people with disabilities, making up 7.6 percent of its population.-VNA
