UNESCO Director General Irina Bokova has pledged to continue assisting the central province of Thua Thien-Hue in protecting and preserving cultural heritage and its values.

At a reception held for UNESCO’s top official during her working visit to the province on June 23, Chairman of Thua Thien-Hue People’s Committee Nguyen Van Cao expressed gratitude for the organisation’s assistance and cooperation over the last 30 years.

Cao said UNESCO has helped the central province implement many projects to protect, restore and preserve its cultural relics and hailed Bokova’s visit as an important step in enhancing ties further.

The visit took place at a time when the province is preparing to mark the 20 th anniversary of UNESCO’s recognition of Hue ’s relics as world cultural heritage, and 10 years since Nha nhac Cung dinh Hue , the royal music of the former imperial capital, was named as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Bokova praised the province’s efforts in cultural management and added that UNESCO will help the province fight climate change and provide knowledge and experience where needed.

On the same day, the UNESCO leader was taken on a visit to relics in the ancient capital of Hue.-VNA
