Vietnam has always acknowledged Italy ’s role in Europe and is keen to develop friendship and cooperation with the country, Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh has said.

Minh made the remark at talks with his visiting Italian counterpart Giulio Terizi D Sant'Agata in Hanoi on Feb. 29.

He underlined Vietnam ’s foreign policy of independence, self-reliance, diversification and active regional and international integration.

Minister Sant’Agata praised Vietnam ’s achievements in national renewal and said Italy wants to strengthen ties with Vietnam , which plays an important role in Southeast Asia and ASEAN.

He affirmed Italy recognised Vietnam ’s market economy and said he hoped that both countries will lift relations to a strategic partnership in the near future, especially as both prepare to celebrate the 40 th anniversary of diplomatic ties in 2013.

The two sides agreed to step up the exchange of delegations and strive to raise the turnover of two-way trade to 3 billion USD during 2012-2013. They will also make it easier for businesses from both countries to seek out partners and investors, including the public private partnership (PPP) model.

They also exchanged views on regional and international issues of mutual concern and expressed wish to continue to support each other at regional and international forums, especially the UN, ASEAN-EU and ASEM.

Sant'Agata also invited his Vietnamese counterpart to pay an official visit to Italy which Minh accepted with pleasure.-VNA
