Algiers (VNA) – Algeria and Vietnam should press ahead with developing their friendship and multi-faceted cooperation which has yet to match potential and aspirations, Speaker of the People’s National Assembly of Algeria Mohamed Larbi Ould Khelifa said.

At a meeting with Vietnamese Ambassador to Algeria Pham Quoc Tru on January 18, Khelifa expressed his admiration for the Vietnamese people’s undaunted fight against colonialism and imperialism to gain and protect national independence, saying they set a shining example for victims of oppression around the world.

He also had a high opinion of the country’s socio-economic development attainments in recent years.

Highlighting their traditional relations, he said Vietnam was one of the first countries to recognise and set up diplomatic ties with Algeria after the African nation gained independence in 1962.

They have continually been united, supported each other and closely coordinated in many international and regional issues. Bilateral cooperation has enjoyed strides in various spheres, including the partnership between the two parliaments, he added.

The parliaments should increase cooperation, exchanges, experience sharing and consultation about internal and external affairs, Khelifa said, asking Tru to convey his New Year greetings to the Chairwoman of the Vietnamese National Assembly.

For his part, Ambassador Tru renewed that his country treasures the time-honoured amity and all-round cooperation with Algeria and wants to lift that relationship to a new height.

He pledged all efforts during his tenure to contribute to bilateral connections.-VNA
