At least 60 people have died and over two hundred were injured due to a powerful storm that hit two eastern Indian states at midnight on April 13, the Press Trust of India has reported.
The storm, with a wind speed of more than 100 km per hour, swept through North Dinajpur district in West Bengal and the four neighbouring districts of Bihar, destroying around 50,000 homes and leaving hundreds homeless, the media said.
Thirty-one people were killed and one hundred were injured when the storm tore through one four-block section of North Dinajpur district, according to the news agency.
The storm uprooted thousands of trees and toppled electricity poles, seriously affecting power networks and telecommunications, said the state's civil defence minister Srikumar Mukherji.
The hardest-damaged villages include Hematabad, Raiganj and Kiran Dighi. The local authorities are coordinating efforts to support the victims.
