Jakarta (VNA) – A 6.2-magnitude earthquake shook the area offshore Maluku province in the East of Indonesia on the morning of September 8, but no tsunami alert was issued.
According to the Indonesia Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency, the quake happened at 7:45am (local time) with its centre being at 193km under the seabed, about 198km southeast of Central Maluku district.
Indonesia experiences frequent seismic and volcanic activity due to its position on the Pacific “Ring of Fire”, where tectonic plates collide. In 2018 alone, the country was hit by 11,577 earthquakes which caused heavy losses in human lives and property./.
