75 countries, which together turn out over 80 percent of global greenhouse gases, have committed themselves to reducing or limiting the growth in their emissions by 2020, according to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
In a press release issued on March 31, the organisation said that their commitments were based on the Copenhagen Accord reached at the UN Climate Change Conference in the Danish capital late last year.
According to the press release, 111 countries and the European Union (EU) have indicated their support for the accord.
“It is clear that while the pledges on the table are an important step towards the objective of limiting the growth of emissions, they will not in themselves suffice to limit warming to below 2 degrees Celsius”, UNFCCC Executive Secretary Yvo de Boer, however, said.
Boer reckoned that the coming UN Climate Change Conference, expected to take place in Mexico at the end of this year, should put forward effective cooperation mechanisms to accelerate actions to combat climate change at national, regional and international levels and make preparations to cope with its inevitable impacts./.
