Import and export activities among the Mekong delta provinces and between the region with ASEAN countries will receive a boon as preparation work has started for a deep water seaport in Kien Giang province.

Tan Tao Group, owner of the project, on July 10 signed an engineering consultancy agreement for the Nam Du Deep Water Seaport Project with Royal Haskoning Vietnam Ltd.

With an estimated capital investment of around 800 million USD, the seaport is expected to facilitate the transport of goods to and from Mekong delta provinces and be a gateway to ASEAN countries of Vietnam.

It will also serve as a transit point for coal transport to the Kien Luong Power Complex and other power plants in the Mekong delta area.

The Nam Du Deep Sea Water project is divided into two phases. After the first phase (2010-2013), the seaport is expected to have a throughput of 12 million tonnes of coal and five million tonnes of other cargoes per year.

The second phase (2014-2020) will raise the port’s capacity to 50 million tonnes of coal and 12 million tonnes of other cargoes per annum and enable it to receive ships of up to 200,000DWT./.
