Hanoi (VNA) – The Vietnam National Union of Building Workers launched an action month on labour safety and hygiene in Hanoi on May 18 with an aim to preventing and controlling risky factors at workplace to minimise occupational accidents and illness in construction.
Addressing the launching ceremony, Deputy Minister of Construction Le Quang Hung said that great attention has been paid to protecting labour safety and hygiene at construction site where tens of dozens of labourers work, thus minimising labour accidents and illness.
Statistics of the Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs, labour accidents reduced in the 2015-2017 period. In 2016, accident cases in construction accounted for 23.8 percent of total labour accidents of the whole country, with deaths making up 24.5 percent. In 2017, the figures dropped to 20.8 percent and 19.7 percent respectively.
However, according to Hung, occupational accidents in construction has still made up a high proportion compared to other sectors, and construction activities have still seen high risk of accidents.
He stressed that labour accidents cause serious and long-term consequences for the victims as well as their family and society.
Meanwhile, Cao Tung Lam, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Phuc Hung Holdings Company, said that as part of efforts to prevent labour accidents and accident risks, last year, the firm invested big in developing technical solutions and safety measures to improve production environment.
During the month, the construction sector will strengthen information and communications on the Party and State’s policies and law as well as guiding documents related to labour safety and hygiene in construction.
At the same time, the sector will build and implement a system of regulations, procedures, measures and plans on safety management in construction activities, while ensuring effectiveness of training in labour safety and hygiene.
At the ceremony, Deputy Minister Hung called on workers and enterprises to fully implement their obligations in the field.-VNA
