Ambassador calls for US involvement in Mekong Subregion development

Vietnamese Ambassador to the US Nguyen Quoc Cuong has called on US enterprises, organisations and universities to strengthen their engagement in efforts to maintain sustainable development in the Mekong Subregion.
Vietnamese Ambassador to the US Nguyen Quoc Cuong has called on US enterprises, organisations and universities to strengthen their engagement in efforts to maintain sustainable development in the Mekong Subregion.

The diplomat was delivering a keynote speech at a January 15 forum on global solutions on the application of new technologies at the invitation of the P80 Group Foundation – an organisasion founded by former readers of more than 90 countries, including US former President Bill Clinton.

Ambassador Cuong also called for the US involvement in the public-private cooperation model, human resources research and training, data and experience sharing, the transfer of technology related to plant varieties and climate change response, vaccines for animals and human use, green energy climate change adaptation and environment protection proprammes by developing green agriculture.

He also applauded efforts of the foundation and partners in assisting the transfer of green and sustainable technology to developing countries, including Vietnam .

Cooperation for sustainable development in the Mekong Subregion is among top priorities of Vietnam and a focus of cooperation between Vietnam and the US as well as in the framework of the Larger Mekong Sub-region Initiative (LMI), he affirmed.

The diplomat noted that the Mekong Subregion – a shared rice bowl and top important seafood source of Vietnam, the region and the world, is facing great challenges in climate change, sea level rise and inappropriate use of upstream and lower water resources.-VNA
