At the beginning of May 2014,China illegally dispatched the rig as well as a large fleet of armedvessels, military ships and aircraft to Vietnam’s waters and positionedthe rig at 15 degrees 29 minutes 58 seconds north latitude and 111degrees 12 minutes 06 seconds east longitude. The location is 80 milesdeep into Vietnam’s continental shelf and exclusive economic zone.
Despite Vietnam’s protest, China expanded itsscale of operation and moved the rig to 15 degrees 33 minutes 36 secondsnorth latitude and 111 degrees 34 minutes 11 seconds east longitude, 60nautical miles deep inside Vietnam’s continental shelf and exclusiveeconomic zone.
China’s armed vessels have aggressively andconsistently fired high-power water cannons at and intentionally rammedagainst Vietnamese public-service and civil ships, causing damage tomany boats and injuring many people on board.
On July 7, China deployed up to 110 ships of various types, includingfour military ships to defend the rig, and chase Vietnamese lawenforcement ships that were operating normally in their national waters.
These acts are perverse, infringing upon Vietnam’s sovereignty and international law.
The company’s trade union said it is right to stage peaceful marchesin protest against China’s wrongful acts, advising every worker to watchout for traps attempted to sabotage the national economy by extremistsand hostile forces.
Present at the event, the provincialFederation of Labour called on workers to stay united and support theParty and State’s stance on safeguarding national sovereignty at sea.
In mid-May, disturbances erupted in some localities, includingcentral Ha Tinh and southern Binh Duong and Dong Nai provinces, duringworkers’ rallies protesting China’s illegal placement of its oil rigHaiyang Shiyou – 981 in Vietnam’s waters.
Some extremistsincited others to destroy the property of foreign firms, as well as somebelonging to the State, national businesses and individuals, andresisted on-duty law enforcement officials, disrupting social order andbusiness activities.
Authorities have arrested and brought to trial hundreds of rioters.-VNA
