ASEAN defence chiefs on March 25 endorsed the 2010-2011 Action Plan and the Hanoi Resolution, which look to outline important orientations for their effective and practical cooperation in future.
The documents were passed at the end of the 7th ASEAN Chief of Defence Forces Informal Meeting (ACDFIM-7) that opened in Hanoi the same day with the participation of leaders from the 10 ASEAN armies.
The ASEAN defence chiefs shared their views on the need to continue reinforcing, expanding and raising the effectiveness of defence cooperation to contribute to maintaining peace, stability and prosperity in the region.
They hailed Vietnam ’s initiative to organize a meeting of the chiefs of the ASEAN army medical corps to share information, skills and experiences relating to humanitarian assistance and the fight against disease.
Addressing the closing session, Chief of the Vietnam People Army’s General Staff Sen. Lt. Gen. Nguyen Khac Nghien affirmed that the ACDFIM-7 had been a success.
Later, General Nghien, who doubles as Deputy Defence Minister, held bilateral meetings with the defence chiefs of Brunei , Myanmar , the Philippines , Singapore and Indonesia .
The guests praised the Vietnam People’s Army for its thorough preparations for the ACDFIM-7 and expressed the wish to continue stepping up bilateral military cooperation to deal with non-traditional security issues for the sake of peace and prosperity in each country as well as the entire Southeast Asian region./.
