The Women Parliamentarians of ASEAN Inter-parliamentary Assembly (WAIPA) held a conference on September 15, in Vientiane, Laos, to discuss how to enhance the role of female parliamentarians in building the ASEAN Community.
During the event, participants from all ten ASEAN member countries also discussed efforts to prevent violence against women and children and the leading role of women in the region.
They proposed a higher female rate in ASEAN’s legislative bodies, contributing to enhancing protecting women and children’s social welfares. They called on ASEAN member countries and agencies of the ASEAN Inter-parliamentary Assembly (AIPA) to take more actions towards gender equality, meeting the millennium development goals and building the ASEAN Community.
Truong Thi Mai, head of the Vietnam National Assembly’s Committee for Social Affairs, said the Vietnamese delegation to the event proposed increasing comprehensive measures and educational activities to prevent women and children trafficking.
The conference was part of the 35th AIPA in Vientiane from September 15 to 20.-VNA
