ASEAN Secretary General Surin Pitsuwan said Myanmar 's successful by-election will pave the way for the nation to integrate into ASEAN and the global community.
On the sidelines of the ASEAN Foreign Ministerial Meeting (AMM) in Phnom Penh on April 2, Pitsuwan said the elections manifest strong enthusiasm and support for democracy in Myanmar .
"The level of participation was very high and it has taken the country a step closer to irreversible reform", he added.
Meanwhile, Cambodian Foreign Minister Hor Nam Hong lauded the success as a significant step towards democratic reform in Myanmar . He also urged the global community to lift economic sanctions to promote democracy in the country.
The National League for Democracry led by Aung San Suu Kyi won 40 out of 45 parliamentary seats on being contested.
Following the victory, Suu Kyi called for national unity to bring peace and prosperity for the country.-VNA
