Some 40 ASEAN agricultural officials and representatives of international organisations are gathering in Vientiane, Laos to exchange information and experiences in the implementation of prevention and control policies against trans-border diseases in livestock and poultry.
The 18 th ASEAN sectoral working group meeting on livestock, taking place from May 5-7, is expected to play an important role in strengthening the coordination among ASEAN countries in controlling livestock diseases and improve livestock farming conditions in the region.
The meeting will help improve the quality and safety of cattle and poultry trading activities, said Bounkhouang Khambounheuang, Director General of the Livestock and Fisheries Department under Laos ’ Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry.
He said the Lao government has taken various measures to control and prevent diseases among animals, the most notably of which is the code on livestock farming and veterinary. This, he added, has created a firm legal basis for the effective work of disease control and prevention.
According to official statistics from Laos ’ Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, the country had around 2.8 million cattle, 2.9 million pigs, 400,000 goats and 21 million poultry in 2009./.
