He said others were the endorsement of new ASEAN Plan of Action for Energy Cooperation (APAEC) 2026–2030 that would serve as the region’s roadmap for the next five years and the endorsement of the ASEAN Petroleum Security Agreement (APSA) Successor Agreement.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the 43rd ASEAN Ministers on Energy Meeting (AMEM-43) and related meetings on October 16, Anwar said this goal can be achieved through ASEAN’s unified efforts and political determination to harmonise regulations, finance infrastructure, and ensure effective governance.
The ASEAN Energy Business Forum 2025, themed “Powering ASEAN: Cross-Border Connections and Building Prosperity”, is expected to serve as a platform to initiate partnerships and capture new opportunities for regional energy collaboration.
2025 will be a pivotal turning point for ASEAN’s energy cooperation, marking the culmination of the ASEAN Plan of Action for Energy Cooperation (APAEC) Phase II (2021–2025), and the beginning of APAEC 2026–2030
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said key decisions regarding the APG roadmap were expected to be finalised at the 43rd ASEAN Ministers on Energy Meeting (AMEM) in Kuala Lumpur this October, following encouraging progress made during the recent Senior Officials Meeting on Energy (SOME).
Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim noted that the Asia-Pacific region accounted for half of global energy consumption and 60% of greenhouse gas emissions in 2024. Despite this, regional countries, including eight of ten ASEAN member states, remain committed to climate goals, including net-zero emissions and tripling global renewable capacity by 2030.
