Some 220 competitors from vocational training schools of 10 ASEAN member countries are vying for honours at the 8 th ASEAN Skills Competition, kick-starting on Nov. 18 in Nonthaburi province of Thailand.
Addressing the opening ceremony, Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhon said the competition aims to promote competence and ideas, increase skills standards and heighten the value of labour and skills for young generations.
Vietnam has sent 36 competitors to the competition, which lasts till Nov. 23. Competing in 18 of 21 events, the Vietnamese team hopes to rank third at the competition.
Vietnamese strengths are in electrics, information technology, gastronomy, fine arts, web and graphic design.
The ASEAN Skills Competition has been held since 1995 and Vietnam took part in the event in 2001 for the first time.
Vietnam ranked first among participating teams at the 2004 and 2006 events, ranked second at the 2002 competition, and ranked fourth in 2001 and 2008./.
