Twenty-four national disaster management officers (NDMOs) from ASEAN countries have gathered for a course to learn the skills needed for the Disaster Monitoring and Response System (DMRS).
The DMRS Training-of-Trainers Course, which took place in Jakarta from February 1-3, was organised by the ASEAN Coordinating Centre for Humanitarian Assistance on Disaster Management (AHA Centre).
According to Said Faisal, Executive Director of the AHA Centre, the DMRS is a sophisticated system that uses the Pacific Disaster Centre’s Disaster AWA RE platform widely utilised in the US, Latin America and throughout the Asia Pacific region.
The system is able to alert disaster managers, with near real-time information, to natural catastrophes such as earthquakes, tsunamis and tropical storms.
The course, funded by the ASEAN-US Technical Assistance and Training Facility, took place after the US-supported disaster information system was launched at the 21st Meeting of the ASEAN Committee on Disaster Management in Chiang Mai, Thailand last month.-VNA
