The Ministry of Labour, War Invalids and Social Affairs, in conjunction with the United Nations High Commission for Refugees, held an ASEAN regional conference on strengthening social welfare and services for vulnerable groups in Hanoi on September 11.

The event was part of the eighth ASEAN Senior Officials’ Meeting on Social Welfare and Development (SOMSWD 8).

It aims to improve the knowledge and awareness of ASEAN member countries on protecting vulnerable groups which include women, children, the elderly and people with disabilities, as well as share information on the countries’ strategies, policies and programmes to provide essential services for these groups.

The conference also contributed to reinforcing the role of governments and the cooperation of social partners to boost social welfare policies and services.

Social welfare is one of the main goals of the ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community (ASCC) and is important to realise the ASEAN Community. It will also help speed up the formation of a caring and sharing society, ensuring the development of all the people.

The ASCC’s master plan is to ensure happiness and the livelihoods of people in the region by reducing poverty, ensuring social welfare, building a safe environment and dealing with issues relating to health development. Under the plan, the organisation has promoted social welfare and services for ASEAN people, supporting many projects and activities.-VNA
