ASEAN women, children commission meets

The ASEAN Commission for the Promotion and Protection of the Rights of Women and Children (ACWC) held its first session in Jakarta on Feb. 16.
The ASEAN Commission for the Promotion and Protection of the Rights of Women and Children (ACWC) held its first session in Jakarta on Feb. 16.

According to the ASEAN Secretariat, during the three-day session, the agency will work out its operation regulations and action plan for five years and coordination measures with the ASEAN Inter-governmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR).

In the first day of sitting, Kanda Vajrabhaya from Thailand was elected as ACWC Chairwoman and Ahmad Taufan Damanik from Indonesia , as Vice Chairman.

ACWC’s establishment was aimed at boosting the development, confidence and participation of women and children in the process of building the ASEAN Community as well as promoting the education and communal awareness on the rights of women and children.

Each ASEAN member country has two representatives to the commission./.
