Amid the world economy’s on-going recovery, it is vital to promote cooperation in the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) toward a sustainable development, the organisation’s economists agreed.
The economists delivered this conclusion at the end of a seminar seeking post-crisis development models for ASEM member countries that concluded on April 27 in the central coastal city of Nha Trang .
However, there is no single development model suitable for all ASEM member countries, said the economists--each member must look for its own model based on its own unique circumstances.
The seminar, hosted by the Central Institute for Economic Management, has attracted more than 70 scientists and representatives from economic institutes, policy planning agencies and businesses within ASEM.
At the seminar, the participants focused their discussions on three major issues – experiences in coping with the global financial crisis, ASEM’s geo-economic role and post-crisis development models, and commercial and investment cooperation in ASEM to achieve millennium development goals and sustainable development.
To overcome the crisis, ASEM members should restructure their financial and banking system, then their economies, said the economists.
In addition, it is necessary for the countries to continue their economic stimulus packages and increase public investment in accordance with each country’s financial capacity.
According to them, the countries should pay due attention to improving people’s living conditions, ensuring high-quality human resources and should try to upgrade technology.
Also, they need to boost cooperation in trade, investment and in other fields, jointly protest protectionism and strike a balance between exports and domestic consumption.
These conclusions will be submitted to the ASEM Summit which is scheduled to take place in Brussels in October./.
